What to Do When Your Car Breaks Down

A practical roadside checklist for breakdowns in towns, rural roads and winter conditions.

Move to safety if possible

If the vehicle can be moved safely, stop somewhere away from live traffic. Switch on hazard lights and follow police or road-operator instructions on high-speed roads.

Share the exact location

A map pin, road name, direction of travel and nearby landmark can save time.

Explain the vehicle condition

Tell the operator whether the vehicle rolls, steers and brakes and whether there is accident damage, locked wheels or low suspension.

Keep passengers safe

Prioritise personal safety over the vehicle. Do not stand between traffic and the broken-down car.
